This is a new character designed for my future manga graphic novel (if I ever intend to find the time to do it). I think there's still some changes that can be made, the clothes for one. I want clothing that looks stylish but hasn't been seen before. The idea came up last night when I realised my previous intended character was so bland and didn't have any attitude. So I looked through some artwork and then intended to go for a more serious apprach. Someone who could look deadly or humourous if he so desires without making the expression look like a totally different character.
He has no name yet, I'm still trying to think of something. There will be another character to add to my deviation collection, soon, I hope...
i wasn't sure whether to colour him or not. the only reason why i whacked on some grayscale colours was because i was just going to post it on Evolution's (Hyper's alternative) forum. but i figued if i put a little more effort into it, i could use it as a deviation as well to avoid my 6 month per deviation delays.
i reckon i might do one grayscaled version and one colour. just for some variation and more attention. the coloured version would have a couple of small changes, i'd really like the coloured one to contain the rest of his body as i wanted him to be flicking a lighter to light up his cigarette. and also just so i could reveal more of his character
all lineart was done in adobe photoshop. no scanning involved. it takes a while but with bigger resolutions i can cleanup the lineart much easier. i'll have to remember this in the future when it comes to small detail. actually now that i think about it, it didn't take me too long. maybe 5 or so hours. i had one of those days where everything turned out right straight away, no massive delays, except on clothing. damn clothing, maybe i should look into some fashion magazines
Are you gonna colour him, or keep the comic greyscale?
oops, wait, might've misread that. do you mean the comic itself or the current deviation? the comic would have to be in grayscale for me, whereas i'd only use colour for cover pages
looks great mate you've really nailed the attitude aspect. attitude is actually pretty hard to do without it coming off looking try hard or boring. well done. the clothes look awesome too (is the emoticon on the shoulder a shout out to kami? ) coming up with clothing that's entirely original but doesn't look ridiculous is hard too. it looks like it's all coming along nicely though.
so is this part of the manga you've been working on for ages or are you like me, got bored with your original idea and decided to come up something new?
mind if i take a crack at colouring the sucker? looks like it'd be fun...
Good stuff man. Yeah, I was mainly talking about the entire comic. I think keeping it greyscale would enhance the whole 'edgy' vibe you're going for. A colour cover would be cool, but I wouldn't go all bright, I could imagine some badass blue tones...not a typical oldschool colour scheme. In saying that though, this is just what I have imagined after seeing that character, you've probably got an entirely different vision...
Out of interest, have you had much experience with Adobe Illustrator, or any other vector based illustration programs? They take a little longer to get the hang of, but they can produce 100% crips linework...which could be good for really detailed elemets (ie the cover, or an extreme close-up). Could be worth looking into?

I love the crisp linework. Are you gonna colour him, or keep the comic greyscale? (greyscale would be cool!)

if i got a toupee', started smoking cigarettes and then got someone to give me a scar with a pointy object
